Support Cuba’s fight to reduce infant mortality

The Auckland Cuba Friendship Society is supporting an international campaign by Global Health Partners, working with Cuba’s Ministry of Health to combat a sharp rise in infant mortality. Cuba’s infant mortality rate has more than doubled since 2018, one of the cruelest impacts of the economic crisis intensified by Washington’s blockade.

The campaign, Neonatal and Maternal Healthcare Initiative, aims to provide Cuban hospitals with lifesaving medical equipment and preventive interventions to support healthy mothers and babies.

The achievements of Cuba’s health system following the 1959 revolution were remarkable. Infant mortality fell from more than 70 deaths per 1,000 live births before the revolution to just 4 per 1,000 by 2018. Today, however, the rate has risen to more than 10 per 1,000, as shortages of medical equipment, food and other essential supplies place growing pressure on the health system.

We are collecting donations for the campaign until November 15.
