The Cuba Friendship Society is initiating a solidarity campaign to help defend Cuba from escalating U.S. aggression. We're calling on New Zealanders to take part in a national effort to bring a debate about NZ's national policy towards Cuba before the House of Representatives.
Cuba continues to endure a brutal sanctions regime and the Trump administration's escalation to ban the entry of all energy supplies increases the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe. We are calling on everyday New Zealanders to write to their local MPs and political parties of choice – in favour of a bipartisan resolution condemning the United States' genocidal policy towards Cuban society.
That the House expresses:
• Its opposition to any threat or use of military force against Cuba by the U.S.
• Its opposition to the economic embargo and oil blockade against Cuba, recognising the humanitarian harm caused by such measures
• Its support for diplomacy, dialogue, and the resolution of conflict in accordance with international law.
MPs are able to move an urgent debate under Standing Order 399, with the agreement of the Speaker of the House. The campaign aims to cast public scrutiny on the complicity of governments in the slow genocide of Cuba, which is guilty only of being the threat of a good example. Cuba has demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of sixty years of unmitigated hostility, hostility driven by the desire to crush any living, successful demonstration of what a nation can be when it is organised on social need not wealth extraction.
